THE UTA HAGEN TECHNIQUE

taught by Lindsey Higgins

Work on scenes from great modern plays. 60 Grit Theatre Company’s Artistic Director leads an eight-week scene study class based on the concepts expressed in Uta Hagen’s landmark book Respect for Acting. In this class, students will undertake several of Hagen’s famous Object Exercises to keenly develop the actor’s skill and awareness in specific areas while promoting rigorous technique and attention to detail. Exercises will help students to overcome performance challenges, such as creating truthful physical life on stage, issues of self-consciousness, remaining present, recreating physical sensations and allowing the creation of authentic human life on stage. Actors of all experience levels are encouraged to participate. Students should obtain and read Respect for Acting by Uta Hagen prior to the first class.

The class will use Shakespeare’s sonnets as a springboard for deep investigation of devised characters and contexts. Through active text analysis, freeing vocal work, physical exploration, and focus on clear acting choices, we will channel our own creativity to discover fresh takes on these image-packed, masterpiece poems. Each session will include rigorous voice and speech exercises, group activities, and guided individual work. Students are expected to work on assigned text regularly outside of the weekly sessions. The course will culminate in an informal sharing.
