SEMESTER-LONG CLASSES: DIG IN!!!!

Spring is just around the corner, and so is a new session of classes at the Acorn Acting Academy!

Spring classes begin the week of March 27th. (Shakespeare Conservatory begins the week of March 20th)

All class take place at Mechanics Hall in downtown Portland


ACTING FOR ORDINARY PEOPLE

taught by Michael Levine

An introductory course for everyone! If you’ve ever wondered what an actor does, this is the class for you! This class creates a fun and safe environment for beginning students looking to gain confidence in their public presentation skills while taking some first steps into acting. Students in the class will use monologues to explore the basic choices an actor must make while working on a role. The emphasis will be on doing — students will be performing in class regularly throughout the semester. No experience necessary!

Mondays from 5:30 to 7:30pm (begins March 27 – 8 weeks)

SHAKESPEARE CONSERVATORY: SHAKESPEARE’S CLOWNS AND FOOLS

taught by Carmen-maria Mandley

Use heightened play and work with Shakespeare’s First Folio to celebrate Shakespeare’s Clowns and fools in this energetic, fun, and wild class. Participants will explore the hilarious, tragic, dangerous, riotous, wretched, and extremely human world of Shakespeare’s ‘funniest’ characters. *Prior attendance at beginning Shakespeare Acorn class or instructor approval required. *

Mondays from 6 to 9:30pm (begins March 20 – 4 weeks)

CONTEMPORARY SCENE STUDY

taught by Sarah Barlow

A class for actors of any level of ability who wish to apply their skills to a polished final product. Students will work with a scene partner to explore a scene from table work to shaping to a public performance. Through this work, students will synthesize many different aspects of the actors’ craft (including learning lines) to challenge themselves as well as one another. All scenes will be from contemporary American plays.

INTRO TO SHAKESPEARE IN PERFORMANCE

taught by Michael Levine

If you have ever wanted to bring the passion and poetry of Shakespeare’s words to life, this is the class for you! Naked Shakespeare’s Founding Artistic Director will assist students in understanding the structure and meaning of the verse, personalize the imagery in the text, and strengthen and deepen their voices through breath work and other vocal exercises. All students in the class will leave with a polished Shakespearean monologue, and be eligible to take Acorn’s Shakespeare Conservatory in the fall. No experience necessary!

Thursdays from 7:30 to 9:30pm (begins May 4 – 3 weeks) – $65
